Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a treatment that involves inserting fine needles into the skin to stimulate specific points on the body. It's a key part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and is often used to treat pain and promote overall wellness.

Benefits of Acupuncture

Acupuncture is used mainly to relieve discomfort associated with a variety of diseases and conditions, including:

  • Chemotherapy-induced and Post-Operative nausea, vomiting or pain
  • Dental pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Headaches, including tension headaches and migraines
  • Labour pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Respiratory disorders, such as allergic rhinitis.
  • Tennis elbow.
  • Myofascial Pain Syndrome
  • Sciatica
  • Chronic Prostatitis/ Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome

How to Prepare for a Session?

To prepare for an acupuncture appointment, you can:

  • Eat a light meal: Eating a light meal a few hours before your appointment can help you avoid feeling dizzy or nauseous.

  • Drink water: Staying hydrated can help you get the best results from your treatment.

  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol: Even a small amount of caffeine or alcohol can interfere with your treatment.

  • Wear loose clothing: Loose clothing allows your acupuncturist to easily access the areas of your body that need treatment.

  • Get enough sleep: A good night's sleep can help you feel relaxed and reduce stress.

  • Prepare your medical history: Provide your acupuncturist with a brief overview of your medical history.

  • Relax: Try to relax mentally and physically before your appointment. You can try taking a deep breath to help you let go of any anxiety or frustration.

What Happens During a Session?

Key points about an acupuncture appointment:

  • Initial consultation: Your acupuncturist will ask about your health concerns, medical history, and current symptoms to determine the best treatment plan.

  • Examination: They might examine your tongue and pulse to assess imbalances in your body.

  • Needle placement: Based on your needs, the practitioner will select specific acupuncture points on your body and insert thin, sterile needles into them.

  • Needle manipulation:Sometimes, the acupuncturist may gently twirl or stimulate the needles once they are inserted.

  • Relaxation period: You will usually lie down comfortably on a table while the needles are in place, allowing time for relaxation.

  • Needle removal: The needles will be carefully removed at the end of the session.

What to expect during an acupuncture session:

  • Minimal discomfort: Most people experience little to no pain when the needles are inserted, often describing a sensation of pressure or tingling.

  • Feeling of relaxation: Many people feel relaxed and even fall asleep during treatment due to the calming effect of acupuncture.
